Twitter Tips These are some tips and tricks you might find helpful when using Twitter, especially if you're new to it - see also How to use Twitter Search Twitter There's a link at the bottom of each Twitter page to search all of Twitter in real time by keyword or username. It's a great way to find people who tweet about topics you're interested in or to follow up-to-the-minute conversations about current topics. The search page and search results show Trending topics, which are the most tweeted-about current discussions. There's also an advanced search to further define your search options. Following too many twits? If you can't keep up with your stream (your own and your followees' tweets), simply unfollow the twits who aren't as interesting as you thought they might be, or those that send too many tweets to keep up with. If you want to keep following them all, be sure to check your Replies link regularly so you don't miss tweets addressed to you, as they can easily get lost among your followees' tweets. Also check your Direct Messages link, as those don't show up in your stream. Alternately, you can use one of the many add-on programs that let you sort your incoming tweets. Hash tags Sometimes you'll see a hash tag or pound sign (#) before a word in tweets. This signifies a specific topic to make it easier for people to find and discuss subjects of common interest. Hash tagged words appear as clickable links in Twitter search results. Links Twitter usually encodes web URLs into clickable links in tweets. Since you only have 140 characters, begin short URLs with www. rather than http://www. to save characters. Twitter will automatically change most long URLs to short URLs, or you can make a short URL yourself at TinyUrl.com or any of the many other URL shortening sites around. Adding pictures You can upload photos to an FTP site or service like Flickr or Imagebucket and then link to them in tweets, but TwitPic is an easy way to add pics to your tweets. They tweet themselves with a recognized safe URL, and comments about them will tweet themselves as @replies to you. TwitPic lets you upload pics on their site, via cell phone, or via email. Just like with Twitter, you can find other twits to follow on their public timeline, refer people to your TwitPic profile page, and embed your latest TwitPics on a website or blog. RSS Twitter feeds There are loads of third party Twitter applications around but you can easily embed your Twitter stream or any twit's tweets into a portal homepage or blog without any special tools. Just click the RSS link at the bottom left of your homepage or the profile of the twit you want to embed to get the code. Log in If you check Remember Me when you log in to your account, you won't have to input your username & password next time you use Twitter unless you click Sign Out. Alternately if you use a public or shared computer, you're better off to sign out each time you leave the site. Multiple accounts You might decide you want a separate Twitter for business, family members, pets, or special interest(s) that you want to keep separate. If so, be sure you're on the right account when you sent a tweet! It's a good idea to use distinct colors for each account. You can always click Home to confirm which account you're on. Security As with all sites, choose a Twitter password that isn't a normal word or something easily guessed. Random letters in mixed upper/lower case and numbers are best. Don't log in if you land on a page from a direct message that asks for your password from a direct message; always be sure you're on Twitter.com when you enter your password, and use caution & judgment when providing your password to a third party site or application intended to integrate with Twitter.
